How chiropractic can help with some surprising problems

Many people think that chiropractic care is for people with back problems. And that is certainly true but it is by no means the whole story. I will let you into a little secret: chiropractors’ main focus of attention is not your bones…we are obsessed with your nervous system. Why? Because your nervous system controls everything in your body: your breathing, digestion, bowel movements, immune system as well as your ability to move, think and feel.

Your nervous system is simply wondrous: your brain sends and receives its life-giving information signals through this network of nerves travelling down from your brain stem, through your spinal cord and out through the openings in your protective spinal bones…right down to the tips of your fingers and toes.

Bones come into it, when they are slightly out of alignment or have worn down or grown extra bits that press on and irritate your nerves. When such impingement occurs, your nerves’ ability to send and receive messages is hampered and usually, but not always, you will feel pain. The longer the impingement lasts without alleviation, the greater the risk of permanent damage.

Now, when the nerve being impinged is, for example, your sciatic nerve you feel this impingement as shooting pains in your legs and buttocks. But imagine if the nerve being impinged fed your lungs or your heart or your kidneys. The vital messages between your organs and your brain can also be hampered by impinged nerves and this is how, by freeing up that impingement, chiropractic care can have significant improvements in many organic problems such as asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure, heavy periods and even attention deficit disorders. In fact, new evidence to the safety and value of chiropractic is being published all the time. Chiropractic has more clinical evidence to support its efficacy than any other complementary discipline.

Most of my patients tell me that after a course of chiropractic care, in addition to gaining relief from their presenting problem, they feel generally better and more alive. Until now that has been hard to explain but a recent study may shed some scientific light on it.

A study (published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research) in collaboration with the University of Lund, found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair.

How chiropractic can help you...

What does that mean? Well, as we go through life chemical, emotional and physical stressors negatively impact the nervous system. These disturbances in nerve function are thought to affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level. You will probably have heard of the widely-accepted theory of ageing and disease development based on free radicals damaging and prevent the repair of our DNA. This study wanted to find out if improving the functioning of the nervous system could help reduce this free radical damage.

By measuring antioxidants (which are an indicator that DNA is repairing itself) in people before and after chiropractic treatments (and comparing this with a control group of people not receiving treatment), the researchers found higher than normal levels of antioxidants in the chiropractic patients. This suggests that chiropractic, by enabling the nervous system to function better, appears to improve the body’s ability to adapt to life’s stressors.
