How does physiotherapy work?

Physiotherapists take a holistic approach (looking at the body as a whole rather than focusing on individual factors) to injury, disease and dysfunction. As well as treating a specific injury or illness, we will consider ways to improve your general well-being and quality of life by teaching you how to manage your condition more effectively and looking at lifestyle factors such as diet, posture and exercise.

We may use a range of skilled techniques including:

Joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques:

This involves manipulating the soft tissues of your body. Different types of massage are used to treat different conditions, for example, to improve circulation (the flow of blood around your body), to help fluid drain from parts of your body more efficiently, to improve movement of different parts of your body, or to relieve pain and help relaxation. Conditions that may be treated with massage include neck problems, headaches, and stress.

Exercise, muscle energy techniques, core stability training, stretching and strengthening exercises:

These very specific and different types of exercises will be targeted to your unique problem. Your physiotherapist will advise you about which exercises to do for your particular condition and will also show you how to do them safely.

Acupuncture:

Special very fine needles are inserted at particular acupuncture points on the body that can help relieve the symptoms of a number of physical and psychological conditions. Acupuncture aims to help the body to heal naturally.

Electrotherapy:

We also offer electrotherapy treatments including TENS, ultrasound and interferential therapy. Electrotherapy uses electrical impulses (tiny electrical shocks) to stimulate your nervous system. These impulses are thought to override pain messages, and help promote the healing process.
